What is the difference between surfing Steamer Lane and Cowells?

Steamer Lane is the main event and it is aimed at expert paddlers. These are people who can compete all over the globe. They are able to handle 6-foot walls of whitewater and are familiar with surfing big and rocky waves. Cowells (or Indicators) is the smaller event aimed at the intermediate paddlers. It is held down the point closer to the surfer statue. The waves here are smaller, but still paddlers should be comfortable surfing near rocks. Competitors who are not experts, local, or have not attended the event in prior years are encouraged to sign up for Cowells.

What is the competitor’s meeting on The Thursday before the competition?

The competitors meeting is a mandatory part of the main event at Steamer Lane. During the meeting we discuss safety protocols and how the event functions. Many other FAQ questions are gone over during the meeting. Watercraft are also inspected to ensure they meet classification and safety standards.

Is there a competitor’s meeting for Cowells? When and where? Is it mandatory?

The competitors' meeting for the Cowells Classic will be held at the surfer statue on Saturday morning. This is a mandatory meeting for Cowells Surfing Participants.

When am I surfing?

Heats will be announced each evening during the competition on the website and on Facebook. It is your responsibility to know when you are surfing.

Can I compete at Cowells and The Lane?

No. The Lane is for the most experienced folk. We generally call it sandbagging when someone enters both and that goes against the spirit of the event. However, if you are an expert in one surf craft category and a novice in another, you can of course compete at both sites. All accommodations will be made to not overlap A and B site heats for a competitor in this situation, but can not be guaranteed.

Where do I pick up my jersey for the surf competition?

SCPF will have a designated booth in the vendor village for all competitors. Please pick up your jersey no sooner than 2 hours before your heat, and return them ASAP after your heat.

Can I come watch? Can I watch from the water?

Yes you can watch! Viewing from the cliff-top on the sidewalk, behind the railing, is perfect. You can watch from the water but please stay far in the kelp/channel and out of the completion area. If you are too close we will ask you to leave and you can be sited.

Will the event be cancelled and/or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather?

It is possible the event will be cancelled in the event of extreme weather. That decision would be made by Marine Safety and event organizers. However, it is a rare occurrence and has only happened for one day during one year in the event’s 33+ year history.
